You are a Major in the Norwegian Army who flew in to Jan Mayen Island 4 hours ago to take command of the situation here. What you know: War started yesterday at 1300 GMT when the Soviets attacked The Red Banner Northern Fleet has put to sea, including an amphibious force Specifics on Soviet forces that might come here are unknown. The Norwegian Parliament was hit by a bomb yesterday and the the Minister of Foreign Affairs is the acting Prime Minister, and also the Head of State as the King was killed in the attack. The Airbase at Keflavik was knocked out with a missile attack, the civilian airport at Reykjavík Iceland is still operational. That is your closest air link and its a 3 hour Hurc flight away – not that you have a Hurc! The Next Hurc is due in around midnight, it will bring in more ammunition and remain for a maximum of 24 hours with the job of evacuating your forces or returning home depending on how the situation develops. If the Soviets attack, you will not be able to hold them off; but, you must destroy all cryptographic mateials, key parts of the Radars etc (if they don't do it for you). If they do not attack you will spend several months in this very Cold and Lonely place. The Hurc you came in on evacuated the civilian population, you shake you head – the whole population in one Hurc! Your forces include: A large platoon of signalars, radar technitions and cooks, the only infantryman is the Platoon Sergent! 4 x F-5 Freedom Fighters commanded by a Captain. In total they have 24 Sidewinder missiles and 4 guided bombs (AGM-12B Bullpup). You know they are not happy with the gravel airstrip but it will be solid ice for a few months yet – airforce! 1 x P-3 Orion ASW aircraft, with 2 spairtorpedos. You have specific instructions not to lose this platform! A detachment of 3 RBS-70 ManPads, in total they have 15 missiles The Danish ship Vædderen is ~100 NM North West, its job is to escort the fishing fleet and any civilian maritime traffic out of the area. There are 8-10 fishing trawlers in the area who have been told to proceed to Iceland. There is also a Cruse Liner and several merchant ships in the area. What you suspect: There are submarines, probably American and Soviet but you were told that there is a very high probability that a Norwegian Navy SSK is in the area If the Russians come, they will come by air, there are few suitable landing areas but its doubtful that they would waste amphibious forces here. Still you have asked the Lieutenant in charge of the ManPads to think something up if it should happen. You don't have any anti-armour weapons. They will only come here if their next step is Iceland, you are nothing more than a trip-wire to let people know that 'The Russians are comming'! Reasuring... What you hope: If they come, they will leave the civilian traffic alone, you have the task of protecting it but no real means to do so. That they underestimate our presence and think we have abandoned the island. If so we may have a chance of hurting them. That summer comes to this god forsaken place!
